Boxing clever??

So, we’re coming up to two years old. How time flies! But how should we celebrate? Well I’m sure there’ll be a glass of fizz or two alongside the lunchtime Luxe Company sandwich that day, but we thought we’d use this milestone to raise our game a little, so we put our thinking caps on and worked out what needed attention.

We like to think that The Luxe Company name pretty much tells you what we’re about. ‘Luxury, style, elegance’ is our tag line and we like to live by those words as much as we can and so we decided to introduce a new luxury, stylish and elegant gift box for our customers.

Simple, yes? Or so you might think, but one thing we have learnt over the last two years is that there’s more to a box than four sides, a base and a lid. Frankly, it’s a bit of a nightmare trying to source the right box in the right style with the right features in the right finish in the right size at the right price. Multiply that by two, as we need a small and a large box, and you begin to get a sense of the scale of the problem. Trying to herd cats is probably less challenging.
And, by the by, what part of the phrase ‘gift box’ do you guys in the packaging industry not understand? If my recent experience is anything to go by, all of it!

When I ask you for a gift box I expect you to show me something with a classy, perhaps even textured finish, maybe featuring a tie ribbon or a magnetic catch. Is that really too much to ask? Call me demanding if you will, but perhaps if you’d taken a look at our website before our meeting you’d have some idea of what our business is about! Do your homework. What I don’t expect is for you to show me a cheap, corrugated cardboard manila brown shoebox that frankly I wouldn’t put a dead rat in.

Packaging industry – listen up and recognise what your customers, especially us SME’s, need! We don’t all need bespoke odd-size boxes that cost the earth and add little value to our product. With the growth in eCommerce set to continue exponentially over the coming years, might it not be an idea to develop a range of standard, off the shelf, standard sized postal (i.e. large letter, small parcel, medium parcel) gift boxes that can be produced in high volume (thereby keeping your costs and ideally your prices down) in a range of several standard finishes (I’d suggest black, white, blue, red and silver would cover most needs and if you want to complicate it further how about hi-gloss and matt finishes?) and then personalised in small runs according to individual client’s needs? Sure sounds like a winner to me! I’d certainly be in the market for such. And with increasing focus on excessive packaging, sustainability and the effects of waste on global warming, perhaps you might want to make sure these things are 100% recyclable.

OK, rant over. On a more positive side, I think we might have fought our way through the jungle of useless and prohibitively costly options, machete in hand, to the hidden treasure that could just be our new gift boxes.

The final decision is yet to be made but (please God!) let this be a ‘yes’, if only for the sake of my sanity!
